This Augustinian priory in
Cumbria was built in the 12th century. It was subject to frequent Scottish raids including attack by
William Wallace and Robert Bruce. And
King Edward I was a guest here on a number of occasions.
Wanting to get an early start on our day, we arrived at
Lanercost Priory before it opened. While I would have loved to see inside and learn more, one can only see and do so much. This land is so full of history - when you arrive and find locked doors, one can simply drive a few miles down the road to another historical treasure. Since
Hadrian's Wall is nearby, that is exactly what we did.
