Homemade Heraldry

Elisabeth's Design

We are studying the Middle Ages and a recent focus was knights, castles and chivalry. The kids each made their own shield designs. Elisabeth chose a Christian symbol to pair with a design for our surname. Jonah made a design for my maiden name (purple) and to pair with our surname. I thought it was interesting that they chose similar color schemes.

Sewing a Travel-size Pillowcase

Elisabeth spent the afternoon sewing a pillowcase for a travel pillow that she plans to take on vacation. This pillowcase turned out even better than the full-sized one she did in sewing club with the instructor. I think the smaller size made it easier and I'm thankful that the material was already cut to specifications. The sewing club instructor is meticulous and we certainly get good value for the money.

Summer vacation is upon us. Keep calm and sew something...

Inspiring a Future Geologist?

Elisabeth spent her own allowance on a Discovery Kids Rock & Gem Dig Kit. She was so excited to get home and begin her quest to unlock the treasures inside. It was good to see her spend her money on something educational. The box recommends ages 12 and up, but, after reading the directions, she couldn't fathom why. She spent a couple of hours on this little project and her enthusiasm inspired big brother to get involved as well. Afterwards, she declared she wanted to be an archaeologist. I gave a brief explanation of an archaeologist (who studies human artifacts and remains), a paleontologist (studies fossils) and a geologist (who studies the actual earth) which resulted in her declaring that she in fact wants to be a geologist.
