AMNH Video: Jonah the Astronaut

We made this video back in November during our visit to the American Museum of Natural History.  Apparently there was a glitch in the system as we are just now getting it.  Jonah loved it.  Elisabeth made a dinosaur one later in the day.  I had that one sent directly to the blog.  I wish I would have downloaded and saved it, but I didn't and now I can't access it.  Oh well! 

My Mommy the Rocket Scientist

I promised Jonah we would make a rocket. Both of us had in mind to use a box from a 12 pack of soda. Well, mommy started thinking about how to design a rocket and ended up making some changes after looking at some prototypes online. As a result we had what in my park planning days we called "scope creep." This means that the original scope of the project has grown to include much more than the original intent of the project.

Exploring Kennedy Space Center

Jonah loves planes and spaceships and astronauts as I have mentioned in a previous post. So on our recent visit to Florida we took a day and went to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. We had a great time learning about some of the history of space flight. Did you know there were 6 moon landings? For some reason, I thought there were only two. The last one was in 1972. We went inside the cargo area of a space shuttle - it was really big. We took the bus tour, but there seemed to be a 40 minute wait to get back on the bus at every stop. The kids were fading and we were getting worn out too. So we missed some good stuff - gotta save something for next time!

The Best Me Ever! An Astronaut?

Jonah surprises me almost daily as he learns to articulate his thoughts. Here are a couple from the week.

The other day he picked up a mirror and points to the mirror and says that's Jonah. Then he says, "Look mommy, it's the best me ever." And hugs the mirror tightly to his chest. I'm not sure where he got such great self esteem. I suspect he picked that phrase up from Sesame Street, but I can't say for sure.

Lately he has had this obsession with spaceships. He has loved airplanes for some time but spaceships have won out lately. I think it began when we bought the movie "Wall-e" for him. (He also really likes robots now - you should hear his robot impersonation.) So now everything, toy or not, becomes a spaceship that he flies through the house: ink pen, baby rattle, screw driver, etc. A week or so ago we went to a book store. While in the kids section, Jonah gravitates to a children's book about astronauts. We ended up buying it (Luckily it was in the Bargain Section). It is now one of his favorite books. It very simply describes the life of an astronaut. Well, yesterday we're putting his shoes on to get in the car and he tells me quite matter of factly that he wis going to go to astronaut school and repeated that statement a few times throughout the day.
