Mother's Day Weekend

My mom arrived late Wednesday to spend Mother's Day weekend with us. After recovering from her delayed arrival, we went to the mall for lunch and shopping and then out to dinner at a local Mexican joint on Thursday.  I had forgotten that it was Cinco de Mayo so it was appropriate. We finished the evening on the back porch playing with the kids.

Friday, we went Strawberry picking with Gina and Samual at Porter Farms followed by a picnic at Lake Wheeler Park.  And in the evening we all sat in the living room and watched Tangled together - such a cute movie.

Saturday, Elisabeth, Mom and I met up with my mom's first cousin who lives in the area for a girls day out. We finished out the day watching Kelly do home improvement projects and watching the kids play in the yard. And Grammie finally got to paint Elisabeth's nails.

Sunday, Kelly made us all breakfast and then we headed to Brick Magic. We went last year on Mother's Day as well, and I was blown away by all the brick creations. This year it wasn't quite as astounding to me since I had been before, but I was elated that it didn't seem so crowded. I didn't take the nice camera this time so the pictures aren't as good. Grammie got into the spirit of things and purchased a female doctor mini-figure and patient.  Go Grammie!

All in all a great Mother's Day weekend!

We took Grammie to the airport this afternoon and thankfully she had no delays and made it safely to Orlando. Elisabeth kept saying, "I don't want her to go to airport!"  "I want to go to Florida."

A New Kind of Mother’s Day Gift

Jonah installed new feet on my computer today for my Mother's Day gift!
A couple of weeks ago, I told him about how for two years I have had these new plastic feet for my 10 year old laptop computer and have been too intimidated to install them myself as it required the computer to be slightly disassembled. I suggested he may need some help from Daddy, but that this was the gift I wanted for Mother's Day. Well, Daddy didn't need to help at all!
Over the last year Jonah has gotten braces (and dealt with all the maintenance and appointments that go with them) and glasses as well as learning how to use contact lenses. He has experienced the glories and struggles of competition both in fencing and First LEGO League, learned how to be a team player in our family and in First LEGO League, started mowing the lawn for a bump in allowance and, just this week, cared for and entertained children much younger than him at church functions. When today rolled around, he had all the confidence in the world to take my laptop apart and replace the plastic doohickies so my desk won't get scratched up. It was awesome!
He has been growing and maturing a lot the last year in many different areas. This has made me a bit nostalgic at times, but, especially today, I'm really appreciating his newfound confidence and maturity. Happy Mother's Day to me!

Mother’s Day 2018

For Mother's Day, Jonah (11) gave me the most beautiful little vase. How well I like it demonstrates the degree to which he knows me - kind of amazing. Elisabeth (9) made me a bouquet of paper flowers and a homemade card complete with a 3-D, steaming cup of coffee. The sentiment within is worth more than gold to this mom:
Dear Mommy, thank you for being the best Mother in the entire world. For making me lunch and getting ice cream for me and for convincing me into doing school (even though I don't really like it) because then I wouldn't have learned how to read which I really love. [She switched to cursive here; I presume for emphasis] thank you for being my mother. Love Elisabeth

My Mother's Day

Kelly made me a nice breakfast and gave me a hand molding kit to make a keepsake of the kid's hands. He was going to have it done before giving it to me, but when he saw how complex it was he thought we should do it together. (Not sure a two year old can hold his hand still for a whole minute without lots of help :) We then decided to go to a local put golf and game place. We played a few arcade games - at this stage you don't have to put money in the machines for Jonah. He thinks he's playing when the previews are one. We played a game of golf; Jonah even tried a couple of holes. Then we rode the go carts. Jonah loved this part. Jonah just made the 36" required to ride as passenger. I had a buy one get one free coupon, so Kelly and I took turns chauffeuring Jonah around the track.

This probably sounds cheesy, but as I was watching Kelly and Jonah go around the race track, I got all teary eyed. Not sure why. But it reminds me that earlier in the week I was mourning the fact that he isn't a baby anymore (and thinking Elisabeth will not be one very long), but this was a glimpse of all the fun times we can have with him now and as he gets older.

Afterwards, we went out to dinner and as I write this we're trying to get Jonah in bed early so we can watch "The Day the Earth Stood Still." Now if we can just get him to stand still.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!

Happy Mother's Day to Me

As a homeschooling mom, this makes my day - both kids wrote me a Mother's Day card without prompting or help of any kind. I have arrived! :-)

Mother's Day 2012

My beloved made me a lovely breakfast, both kids presented me with homemade cards, and Jonah made me this beautiful heart out of LEGO. I am so thankful. Happy Mother's Day!

Randomness

On Sunday, Mother's Day, Elisabeth had her first nosebleed totally out of the blue.

Last night, Monday, we all walked to the playground and then on the way back we all jogged almost the whole way - a good half mile. They kids did great! It was almost fun (I don't usually enjoy running). Elisabeth is our endurance runner and Jonah is our sprinter who loves a little competition - as long as he wins that is!

Today, I asked Elisabeth why she liked watching Diego so much. She said that she likes learning about all the animals and the world God made.

Are you a LEGO Fan?

If you are, then you will totally love these pictures. We went to the 2010 Raleigh BrickMagic Festival on Mother's Day (mom's and kid's under 4 were free!). Some of these LEGO Models were spectacular. Enjoy!

Radio City Spectacular: A Great Show in a Grand Hall

The Atrium of Radio City Music Hall
While in New York City this past weekend to celebrate our respective milestone birthdays, my mom and I attended a showing of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. We initially bought tickets for this show in honor of my grandmother who attended a performance here over 60 years ago. Her experience in 1951 left quite an impression on the young girl from McDowell, Kentucky. It is remarkable to think that a Senior trip of that magnitude was even possible for such a small rural school of that era. Thankfully, it was possible and had a lasting impact. She never lost her appreciation and regard for the Rockettes, who have made an annual televised appearance in the Macy's Day Parade ever since I can remember.

All of this was in my mind, and my mother's, as we entered Radio City Music Hall for the first time. To be honest, my expectations of the show were low. After all, I had seen their high-kicking song and dance routine a number of times on TV or so I thought. As I sat and watched the performers with their elaborate costumes and technologically enhanced staging and visual affects, I found myself moved beyond words. There were several pleasant surprises during the show including giant, floating snowflakes and a spectacular nativity complete with live camels and a burrow. All this, combined with the opulence and size of the theatre, made for a remarkable experience.

For the second time in two days, I realized the power of a live performance whether it's a comedy in an intimate theatre with compelling actors as the night before or visually stunning displays of musical talent on a grand stage with hundreds of other people in attendance. There is just something about a well-done live performance that stirs the mind and inspires the soul.

I will never forget this past weekend due in large part to this show and the fact that I was fortunate enough to share it with my mother and in a way, share it with her mother. Because of this experience, I now more fully understand my grandmother's fascination with the Rockettes. I get it now. I see how some performances can leave a lasting impression on us. Previously, I have not put much stock in attending live shows of any kind, but not anymore. Who knows, I may even go out of my way to see local performances that before now I would not have even considered. And I now look forward to taking my daughter to Radio City Music Hall one day, God willing. In that moment, four generations of women will have learned to appreciate a great performance in a grand hall.
